Last week I watched a Singaporean film entitled " Ah boys to Men-Part 1" by Jack Neo. As usual, Jack Neo's movies never disappoint me. The film is about a boy and his friends in Singapore National Service makes me recall of my time when I was in the wataniah few years back during my university time. hahaha. Wataniah is like voluntary/ military reserve force in Malaysia. Some of training shown in the film also same as the training I endured before.
The movie is divided into 2 parts because it is too long. It got financial sponsor from Singapore Ministry of Defence, besides sponsor from other Singapore big company. This part is about a boy that is enlisted to join National Service but refuse because he wants to join his girlfriend to study abroad. Failed to come up with medical reason and help with MP, the boy begin his life at Tekong Island Basic Military training. In the camp he get friends with his bunk-mate that have different characteristics. During the camp, sometimes he pretend to be sick in order to avoid from doing certain activities. Things got worsen up when he come home for book out day ( the day when the NS recruit can spend weekend nights at home), her girlfriend wants to break up with him and further studies abroad with her new boyfriend. He then back to the camp with breaking-heart and depressed until he lose his rifle's muzzle. As the punishment, the Sergeant confined him from book out day that weekend. He find way to get sick so that he will be sent to hospital and can get escaped to sent his ex-girlfriend to the airport, to show that he really loves her. Nevertheless, he got very seriously hydrated and in critical condition and admitted to hospital. Hearing the news, his mother is very worried and panicking while his father's heart got weak and get involved in accident on the way to the hospital. Soon, he realized that he has troubled many people and his loved one with this action. He is embarrassed to his father by acting so childish and caused his father to become paralyzed. He determines to change his attitude and become better recruit and better son.
The movie continues ...... ( I haven't watched part 2)
Then I continued watching series on Singapore National Services- "Every Singaporean Sons". The series show detail on the activities they need to do and passing mark they need to get during the Basic Military training.
From my personal opinion, I really think this kind of training/service is very good. People can learn many things and meet many kind of people in this training. Wataniah also brings great memories to me (in spite of I will not renew my service in Wataniah. Hahaha). The days during the training is tough like hell and sometime makes me want to give up (and makes my skin really dark and become itchy). But think of it now, it is a thing that not everyone have chance to experience.
I pray our country is always in peace and I give my respect and salute to the Malaysian military.
